Privacy Policy
Last updated 2026-10-06 (videos added). Plain language, and accurate to exactly what this app does.
The short version
Jaxx Guitar has no account system, no server, and no database. It runs entirely on your device. There's nothing to sign up for, nothing stored about you on a server, and nothing sold.
What's stored, and where
Your lesson progress, streak, XP, stars, review schedule and learned songs are kept in your device's local storage. This data never leaves your device, isn't tied to your identity, and can be erased by clearing site data for this website — or, in the iPhone/iPad app, by deleting the app.
Microphone
We use your phone's microphone only to hear your guitar strings, nothing else, and only when you turn it on: for the tuner and for Wait for me / Play in time practice, which listen for the note you play. Audio is analyzed live on your device and is never recorded, stored, or sent anywhere. You can decline microphone access and still use everything else (you can tap the on-screen fretboard instead).
Uploading your own recording
If you upload an audio/video file so Jaxx Guitar can work out its chords, the file is processed
entirely on your device by an open-source machine-learning model (Spotify's
basic-pitch) bundled inside the app. The file is never uploaded anywhere.
"Which song is this?" (iPhone and iPad app)
When you upload a song in the iPhone/iPad app and tap Guess the song, the app uses Apple's ShazamKit. It turns about 12 seconds of the recording into an audio fingerprint on your device and sends only that fingerprint to Apple to look the song up, never the recording itself. We don't receive or store it. Apple's privacy policy applies to that lookup. The website doesn't do this.
MIDI
In browsers that support Web MIDI, a connected MIDI guitar/controller's notes are used live on your device only — never recorded or sent anywhere.
Network requests
The app's code, song data, sounds (synthesized on your device), photos and the transcription model are all bundled with the app. The only third-party request is optional: some lessons have a "Watch" video button, and a song's page asks Apple's public iTunes Search for its cover art, sending only the song's title and artist (nothing about you); the picture is saved on your device so it's only asked for once, and tapping it opens the song in Apple Music. Nothing is loaded from YouTube until you tap it. On the website the video then plays from YouTube's privacy-enhanced domain (youtube-nocookie.com); in the iPhone/iPad app, tapping opens the video in YouTube. YouTube's own privacy policy applies to what you watch there.
